NEW RESEARCH COMMITTEE
The GED: BETTER 2nd CHANCES
FOR A BASIC EDUCATION
Applications Due (http://e2.ma/click/9wtkf/hn3j8g/xnikcb): Monday, June 24
Achieving the “40-40-20” goal by 2025 will require all adult Oregonians to have earned, at the least, a high school diploma, a GED or its equivalent.
To find out how we can help, the City Club Research Board surveyed 380 education thought leaders from around Oregon.
Through this process, we learned that one population that does not receive enough attention is the 11% of Oregonians (340,000 people) who have not received a high school diploma or its equivalent. So we’re asking…
How can systems be improved to prepare Oregonians who have dropped out of high school to obtain a General Educational Development credential (GED) that will lead to college or a career?
And we’re forming a Research Committee (http://e2.ma/click/9wtkf/hn3j8g/dgjkcb)to find out.
Want to know more? Read the study charge (http://e2.ma/click/9wtkf/hn3j8g/t8jkcb) and apply for City Club&;s research committee (http://e2.ma/click/9wtkf/hn3j8g/90kkcb) by the end of the day on June 24!

By a vote of 254 in favor and 51 against, City Club of Portland members approved No Turning Back: A City Club Report on Bicycle Transportation in Portland (http://e2.ma/click/9wtkf/hn3j8g/5lmkcb).
The official vote was 254 in favor and 51 against for a total approval rate of 83.3%, surpassing the threshold necessary for the creation of an advocacy committee.
Want to advocate for the recommendations (http://e2.ma/click/9wtkf/hn3j8g/lenkcb) in the report? Apply now! (http://e2.ma/click/9wtkf/hn3j8g/16nkcb)

FRIDAY FORUM
Wave Energy on the Oregon Coast: Sustainable Future or Threat?
Jason Busch, Executive Director of Oregon Wave Energy Trust & Jim Josi, Tillamook County Commissioner
Friday, June 14
Oregon’s public beaches are bountiful and we love them. From fishing and sporting, to tourism and natural resources, we can’t get enough of our coastal views. With all of the miles of coastline, we are also uniquely positioned to continue our work as a leader in renewable energy from the sea. Earlier this year the Land Conservation and Development Commission adopted a new Territorial Sea Plan for Oregon, which specifies how and under what conditions wave energy projects can be developed along the Oregon Coast. BIKE VOTE TOMORROW
Bicycling Needs More Revenue for
Enforcement, Infrastructure, and Education
City Club of Portland released a proposed report on bike transportation in Portland. Following a yearlong research process during which 28 witnesses were interviewed, the study committee finds that bicycling is underfunded in Portland and recommends better infrastructure, enforcement of transportation laws, and community-based bicycling to improve bicycling conditions. Among the recommendations, the study committee proposes a 4% excise tax on new bicycles sold in the State of Oregon, as a way to generate funds for bicycle safety. This report is available for download from the City Club of Portland&;s website (http://e2.ma/click/xbtgf/hn3j8g/p5enbb).
A vote by City Club members tomorrow will determine the Club’s official position on the report and recommendations. Until that time, City Club of Portland has no official position on the report and recommendations made by the committee. City Club members will also have the opportunity to vote online between June 7 and June 11.

FRIDAY FORUM
Beethoven & Biology: Education Still Matters
U.S. Representative Bonamici
Friday, June 7
The future of our economy depends on a well-educated workforce to create and fill the jobs of the 21st century. But here in Oregon, class sizes are growing, teachers have fewer classroom resources, arts education is being cut, and extra-curricular activities are limited or have been eliminated. Federal policy has created incentives to teach to the test, and schools that do not meet rigid testing standards are penalized. Meanwhile, public funding for higher education has been cut and the cost of college has grown by 500 percent since 1986. With strategic and systematic policy changes, we can usher in new generation of promise and prosperity. Read more (http://e2.ma/click/tooef/hn3j8g/594yab).
